Hello, partners and dads-to-be! As we celebrate the journey of pregnancy and anticipate the arrival of a new family member, it’s essential to recognize the unique support Black pregnant women need for optimal health and wellness. Here are FIVE impactful ways you can uplift and assist your partner during this special time:
- Take an Educational Class or Workshop. Enroll in an educational class or workshop to enhance your understanding of infant care, breastfeeding, postpartum depression, etc. These courses not only equip you with practical skills but also provide insights into supporting your partner through any challenges.
- Attend Prenatal Appointments and Advocate. Join your partner at prenatal appointments. Your presence can help ensure equitable care and respectful treatment. Advocate for her needs, ask questions, and participate actively in discussions with healthcare providers to ensure her concerns are addressed.
- Listen Actively and Provide Emotional Support. Pregnancy can be an emotionally challenging time. Actively listen to your partner’s experiences, concerns, and needs. Provide a safe space for her to express herself and offer emotional support and validation. Be patient and kind!
- Share Household Responsibilities. Pregnancy comes with physical and emotional changes. Take on additional household responsibilities to alleviate stress and allow your partner to prioritize self-care and rest. This support is vital for her overall well-being and peace of mind throughout the pregnancy.
- Get Connected with PHEI! Reach out to organizations like the Perinatal Health Equity Initiative (PHEI). By establishing a relationship with Black maternal health experts and clinicians, you gain access to valuable resources and support networks tailored to you and your partner’s needs.
At PHEI, we offer a range of programs and classes to support Black mamas and their partners. Sistahs Who Breastfeed is a free mom-to-mom breastfeeding group exclusively for supporting the unique needs of Black birthing mothers. Our Mamas in Bloom program provides comprehensive wrap-around support throughout the first year postpartum. For mental health support, D.O.P.E Mamas offers access to therapists trained in mental health, both in group and individual settings. These services address common challenges in motherhood, including postpartum depression, anxiety, and reducing the risk of preeclampsia.
