September 22nd is Black Infant Mortality Awareness Day
Every baby deserves the chance to smash cake on their first birthday. But for too many Black families, that moment never comes.
While infant mortality has declined in the U.S., Black babies are still dying at twice the rate of white babies nationwide — and here in New Jersey, they are 3–4 times less likely to reach their first birthday.
This isn’t just a statistic. It’s mothers, fathers, and families grieving babies who should still be here.
That’s why PHEI launched the “Our Babies Deserve Cake” campaign — to shine a light on this crisis and fight for change.

On September 22nd, join us by changing your profile picture to one of yourself or someone you love celebrating their first birthday.
It’s a simple act — but together, our voices can make this invisible crisis impossible to ignore.
Because every Black baby deserves the chance to grow, to thrive, and to blow out their first candle.
💜 Take action. Change your picture. Raise your voice. Together, we can ensure more Black babies reach their first birthday.
